WaterFire. One of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I found it hard to believe this was taking place in the good old U.S.A. Please read on and see how this extraordinary night unfolds!
WaterFire Providence, the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence's renaissance. WaterFire's one hundred sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the firetenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from around the world engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park. WaterFire has captured the imagination of over ten million visitors, bringing life to the downtown, and revitalizing Rhode Island's capital city.
Some extraterrestrial visitors warm up the throngs before sunset.
The Braziers, loaded and ready, await ignition as a gondolier glides peacefully by.
An artist begins her interpretation of this, itself, a unique art form.
A pirate, master of ceremonies, prepares the crowds lining the rivers.
The god of fire, glides by, twirling his blessing above the awaiting pyres.
Scores of people line the banks of the rivers. Surprisingly, the crowd numbers seem "just right" for this unique event.
Here comes the first boat with its ceremonious first flame.
And we begin!
The fires catch a light evening breeze and take their almost desperate gasps of air - of first life!
Admirers of their lighting skills, the "sparks" that lit the fire, glow in reverence of the beloved flames.
Some of the 100 fires burn along the downtown rivers.
And now, nocturnal creatures awaken to the flickering flames and sweet aromas.
Luminarias, created by guests and participants alike, glow on the bordering lawns.
Wishing Stars glow in the trees and cast their fickle glow on dreamers wandering below.
At night's end, people of all ages and dancing skills meld onto a giant dance floor in the heart of the city, celebrating their unique and amazing evening in this glorious and widely unheralded jewel of the east coast.
For my part, being so enamored and in love with photography in Denver, I found at last an east coast town I honestly feel I could call home, and while there would have no shortage of subject matter for my SLRs . It is not likely I would ever move there permanently, as I make my living doing wedding photography in Denver - and far beyond - but one thing I do know, this sweet city which totally wraps its arms around you in a very short time, will surely see this kindred soul again!
