Mental Health Awareness month

Mental Health Awareness month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of emotional wellbeing and to continue breaking the stigma surrounding mental health conversations. As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of documenting many meaningful events over the years, but recently one assignment stood out in a very personal way.
Photographing Purpose
I was honored to photograph the NatCon meeting in Denver for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. The event brought together advocates, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and people with lived experience—all focused on improving mental health care and access across the country.
More Than Just Images
What struck me most wasn’t just the speakers or the packed meeting rooms—it was the openness. Conversations about anxiety, depression, addiction, burnout, and recovery were happening everywhere, without shame or hesitation. Through my lens, I saw connection, empathy, and hope. Those are the moments I always try to capture.
A Reminder We All Need
Mental health affects every family, workplace, and community. Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is simply ask someone how they’re doing—and really listen to the answer. Awareness matters because it creates understanding, and understanding creates support.
I’m grateful to have been part of an event dedicated to helping people feel seen, heard, and supported. This month, may we all remember that mental wellbeing is just as important as physical health.
