Birds of a Feather: Capturing Local Artists

Denver artist AJ Davis finds inspiration for his art in the air all around the metro area.

The giant murals he creates with vibrant colors and meticulous detail capture not only the spirit of the area he’s working in but also the wildlife.

That’s why he’s focused his four murals at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater in Greenwood Village to capture the birds that cohabitate with the long-time concert venue.

“I love the birds around here,” he says. “I hope it opens people’s eyes to the wildlife around them.”

AJ was commissioned to create the murals—two around the back of the seating area, one near the box office and another near the entry—during the amphitheater’s hiatus as the coronavirus shuttered the popular venue. When it reopens, visitors will catch a glimpse of the local birds captured in AJ’s work in stunning color and grand scale.

AJ painted a Great Horned Owl near the venue’s south side to honor the owl that lives under the stage during the off-season, he said. He created the mural with Denver artist Anna Charney over a week—first lining in the details, then bringing the normally camouflaged bird to life with broad strokes of stunning color.

On the other side, AJ’s depiction of a Red-tailed Hawk native to the area was done with Denver artist Alexandrea Pangburn is equally striking—and just as close to AJ. He says he’s watched the birds as he works on the murals, fixated on their flight and adaptability.

It’s a passion AJ has maintained throughout his professional career. AJ has created art for local raptor preserves and donates a portion of his proceeds when he can. AJ, a Colorado native, created a solo exhibition called “Prayer for the Prairie” to expand on the plains themes from which he draws inspiration.

We’re honored to capture local artists helping to reshape the way we see our communities during these times. No doubt when Fiddler’s and its outdoor visual arts garden reopens, thanks to AJ and his co-artists, we’ll see our homes, local wildlife, and communities in new and beautiful ways.
