A Night with a Legend: Johnnie (B. Goode) Johnson

Johnnie Johnson | A Legendary Piano Player

Capturing a Pioneer

Years ago, I had the rare honor of photographing the legendary Johnnie Johnson — the original “Johnnie B. Goode” and Chuck Berry’s iconic pianist. Johnnie’s music helped shape the sound of rock ’n’ roll, but beyond the stage lights and historic riffs, he was pure soul, charm, and joy.

An Invitation I’ll Never Forget

After our photo session, Johnnie and his gracious wife Frances invited me for an unforgettable night out in St. Louis. We hit the local blues clubs where the air buzzed with rhythm and reverence. Everywhere he went, musicians lit up — inviting him to sit in, trading stories and solos deep into the night.

Witnessing Greatness

Watching him behind the keys, still so fluid and full of life, was witnessing history in motion. That evening was more than a night on the town. It was a journey into the living heartbeat of American music, led by one of its architects.

A Lasting Impression

Johnnie’s humility, his fire, and his unwavering love for the blues left a lasting imprint not just on my camera — but on my soul. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.
